Patrick Leung is a graphic designer and calligrapher based in Hong Kong. In 1988, he attended his first workshop in Western calligraphy and by 1999 he had set up the ‘Hong Kong Lettering Arts Club’ with fellow calligraphy enthusiasts.
“A solid foundation and familiar techniques give me freedom to create,” says Patrick. “I keep myself refreshed by exploring new ways to write, different approaches, and the possibilities of employing different writing tools. I have a taste for a cultural fusion of this western art." Patrick combines rice papers and Chinese with western calligraphy; his strokes and curves are beautifully delivered in grey layers and tone, the techniques of flat brush and dip pen are repeatedly reversed and trialled in the course of creation.
Patrick has had group and solo exhibitions in Macau, Seoul and Germany and in 2008, begun to teach calligraphy classes at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
